Starbucks Closing in San Diego
I know this isn’t directly related to real estate but I found it interesting and it will have some impact on retail commercial real estate in San Diego and many other parts of the country. Here is a list of Starbucks in San Diego County that are going to close. Is this a sign of a recession? Don’t you get tired of all the media talking about the possibility of a recession? Lets face it, were in a very bad economic time and the closing of 600 Starbucks is a good example of people thinking twice about spending $5 a day on coffee. I guess it’s back to the instant coffee for a while!
Even as much as I love going to Starbucks (occasionally) I found that the number of Starbucks you would find in some areas was a little bit of an over kill. I live in Downtown San Diego and 4 of the Starbucks closing on this list are in the downtown San Diego area. I can think of 11 locations in about a 16 block radius in the downtown San Diego area.
Below you will find the list of Starbucks closing in San Diego. Starbucks will manage to survive and do just fine as we get past this bad economic time but it is interesting to see how so many people are cutting out expenses like this.

ya im also a fan, i have a sunday afternoon starbucks ritual… and what is even more sad is that more and more people are loosing their jobs…

Quite a few across the country are closing, lost jobs, not good. I heard this story last week on the news, what will this mean to real estate I wonder.

The recession is surely setting in. You can see it all around. Unless we can get the demand for the dollar up in the international markets, things are going to move downhill.

There isn’t a recession yet. Actually, this quarter was an improvement over last’s. That is the exact opposite of a recession.
But a lot of people blame starbucks for the bad economy because people are addicted to it and a cup of coffee costs like $4.

Same here in our country, Starbucks are closing some of its branches, well as said above, I will still remain a SB addict.

everyone says that they will continue to be a Starbucks fan, if the economy really does take a turn Im sure you all will be the first to get off the starbucks boat, this is a luxury item not a necessity! I quit sure you will all still be around and you will find another way to get yoru fix if things really started to turn. they havent turned yet but they still have a chance.

I believe the recession that we are in currently is the result of the excesses of the past. I mean how many starbucks can a small town support. Where I live there are two starbucks within a two mile radius and while they may have done fine when the economy was booming, they are all having a tough time now. But the key to remember is that this too shall pass. Owners of these places need to re-tool their business practices and get more customers to their doors using creativity and smart pricing. If Southwest airlines can have their sixtyfirst continuous quarter of profit, others can do the same. Everyone needs to put on their thinking cap and start thinking positive now. Thank you, Sir.

We’ve the same talk of recession in the UK – although I suspect it’s mostly the media wanting something to talk and write about. It seems to me that people are more selective about where they spend their money at the moment – less buying on impulse and more about buying what they need. It’s probably a good thing for consumers though as prices will have to come down in order for companies to make sales!
I think you have a point that Starbucks will do just fine!

I don’t know how Starbucks are closing at all. I have an aunt who visits the local starbucks every day and drops almost $4 every single. Maybe they expanded too fast?

Yeah I agree- Starbucks overkill one example of the excess that we have had economically. Hopefully with the consolidation and cutbacks of enterprises like this our economy will get some breathing room to make the necessary changes. I, for one am all for a little bit of pruning to facilitate more sustainable and sensible growth. And I don’t think anyone has to worry about not being able to find a latte.

Also remember that Mcdonald’s and Dunkin Donuts have both stepped up campaigns for specialty coffee. Their coffee sales are taking away from Starbucks. I usually go to Mcdonald’s as it usually faster.

I agree with Andrew. A lot of people will rather spend 2 minutes getting McDonalds coffee than spend 8+ minutes getting Starbucks.

Starbucks have lots of branches here in our country, in every call center building there’s a Starbucks nearby. I haven’t seen any stall closed for some reasons.

I’ve been hitting up Burger King for my mocha fixation. Their mochas are very good – silky smooth. And $2 is half the price of a Starbucks burnt mocha.

Could it be age? Not that I’m old or anything! I have a problem with paying that much money for a cup of coffee. I only treat myself a few times a year and buy the beans to grind just once a month. I drink at least two cups of coffee a day brewed from my home coffee maker. Now, my teenaged girls and their friends are a different story. Also, I have younger friends that don’t have a problem with buying that $4 cup each day. I see Starbuck’s opening constantly in Austin, TX. We are growing, fast.
Even Starbuck’s need to study the market and think before opening another store just a few blocks down. Have you noticed banks are doing the same? One on every corner. What’s up with that?

I think Starbucks is beginning to feel the pinch of other venues such as Mcdonalds offering a cheaper alternaive to a $4.00 cup of coffee.

I am having a hard time feeling sorry for Starbucks. We had a local coffee shop here in our town – nice people, and great coffee. Within 1 year, there were 2 Starbucks within 100 yards of this coffee shop, and 3 more within about a 1 minute drive.
Needless to say, the “mom and pop” shop went out of business. They just couldn’t compete with the drive through convenience, or the Starbucks in the local Safeway right next door.
For this reason, I have stopped going to Starbucks – not because they grossly overcharge for a pretty mediocre cup of coffee!

I was going to Starbucks a lot for their espresso – not something that is easily done at home – so I thought. My wife bought me an espresso machine about a year ago for about $100, and I have not been back to Starbucks since.
I can make my own espresso, how I like it – or even make mochas – and I can use a variety of different beans.
The thing is, after about 20 espressos made at home, I paid for the machine.
This is a great way to wean yourself off of Starbucks and save a ton of money. Let’s face it – $4.50 for a coffee – get outta town!

I do agree that Starbuck’s $4 coffee is pretty expensive. It’s become some sort of status symbol for some.
Gourmet coffee lovers don’t mind paying $130/pound of geisha coffee from Boquete though.

Just wondering how many of these vacant stores have been filled since the closings. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a chance to get to San Diego but the vacancies for commercial real estate are starting to pile up in Las Vegas.

I know a lot of people who have lost their jobs actually buy an espresso or coffee machines for home. Instead of running to Starbucks and spending $4.00,they bite the bullet buy, an espresso machine and save money in the long run. I know my crew was really happy when I bought an espresso/coffee machine combo. They save money. Plus no more foam cups(bad for the environment), I use my fancy pants espresso cup.

I use to always go to the Starbucks Downtown in the San Diego area and it’s no longer there but there is another one just about 3 blocks away. I think that Starbucks got a little carried away and opened up too many locations.

This is indirectly related to recession, but by the time we are bidding farewell to it, does starbucks decide to reopen them again? That would be a million dollar question but I really care for those guys who worked in those shops. They can get a chance again.
