Solana Beach Guide
Solana or “Sunny” Beach is a small coastal community in Northern San Diego, right close to the Pacific Ocean (to the west), Encinitas (to the North), Del Mar (to the South) and Rancho Santa Fe (to the east). Though its stretch of shoreline only extends for 1.7 miles, there are several pocket beaches to enjoy although there are times, especially during high tide, when access can be a bit of a challenge.
The beachfront is divided into four main parks. Fletcher Cove, also called Pillbox because of its history as a WWII Gunnery installation, is the most accessible beach in Solana which makes it a popular hangout. There’s a public parking lot, free street parking and is even a few hundred yards away from the Solana Beach train station. People love Fletcher Cove because there are plenty of water activities to engage in like swimming, body-boarding, surfing and surf fishing. Public showers and restroom facilities plus picnic tables complete the whole picture. Tide Beach Park, about half a mile north of Fletcher Cove is perfect for scuba diving, swimming and snorkeling. Its large reef called Table Tops feature beautiful tide pools. Unfortunately, there are no public restrooms here but there are showers, lifeguards and free street parking. Seascape Surf is located ½ mile south of Fletcher Cove. Here the beach is wider so people love to walk, job and play Frisbee. There are lifeguards but only during summer months. Public showers are available but no public restrooms.
When you get tired of the beach, there are many places to visit for other recreational pursuits. For instance, the Cedros Design district is a 4-block long venue for artisans, decorators and antique dealers to show off their craft. Among the shops, you’ll find cafes and restaurants and a very popular night club called the Belly Up Tavern. Nearby Del Mar is also popular especially during race season and many a visitor finds himself lodging at Solana for the interim.
